Hey guys. I have a bit of a problem when it comes to reading. The thing is, I’m very much a seasonal reader. Like during the summer, boy help me, I love to read. But any other time of the year, you wouldn’t catch me dead reading a book. The weather changes and suddenly I’m a reader like never before. I also have the bad habit of buying books that I never read. Literally have like 15 books I haven’t read yet on my shelf, and keep buying more.
What helped me to become better at reading, because believe me, I have been pretty bad at it for a long time. But what helped me was finding the genera that I enjoy. You can read all the Tiktok books in the world, but if you don’t like the genre, chances are you’re not going to like the book.
Personally, if I’m reading fiction I like thrillers or I really enjoy books with a plot twist. I’m currently reading Hopeless by Colleen Hoover, which supposedly has a lot of plot twists. I hope it does, because I really liked her book verity.
However, that’s not the book I’m gonna write about today. I just finished “Atomic habits” by James Clear. The book was amazing. I really enjoyed it and I feel like if you are struggling with changing your life for the better, this book holds some great tips.
I learned a lot from this book that I would like to share with you guys. The first lesson of the book:
One day is not a habit
This goes for both bad habits and good ones. Going to the gym one day isn’t going to do much, keep showing up is when you’re gonna have those results that you want. The same thing goes for bad habits. Eating one pizza is’t going to change your whole body. This makes me more calm and collected and it helps me realize that consistency is key.
Work is stored and you have to see the bigger picture
In the book he explains that if you hit a stone one time, it’s not gonna show anything. However if you keep hitting it, one day it will break. The breaking point might be what we are looking for, but it is the work that got us there that has to be acknowledged. You have to fall in love with the process.
Systems are about the process that leads to success.
You have to fall in love with the process of working on your dreams. Too much time thinking about your dream and not working on the system can make it more difficult to reach. If procrastination becomes productivity we lose progress. Sometimes it is better to just jump out and learn along the way.
The best form of motivation is letting the habit become a part of your personality.
What would a … person do? If your goal is to become more fit, before you do something, think “What would a fit person do”. If the habit is a part of your personality it is more likely to stick. I use this everyday to be more productive. Instead of spending endless hours on my phone, I think, what would a productive person do?
All habits serve you in some way, even bad ones. Which is why you repeat them
Even bad habits serve us in some way. Your job is to figure out which habits serve your present and which serves your future. Bad habits are typically the easiest momentarily, but will have a negative effect on your future. Good habits are the other way around.
Consider when you are most likely to be successful
Which time of the day is your wanted habit most likely to be successful, and do it then. If you know you’re tired and weak in the mornings, then that might not be the best time to go workout. But if you feel like the evenings are when you dip, maybe aim for a morning workout.
Never miss twice
To build a new habit is not to be perfect. The guideline is to never miss twice in a row. If you miss the gym one day, make it a habit of never missing two days in a row. This helps me keep things balanced, even if I sleep for four hours one night, I make sure to get eight the next night.
Until next time…
